Learning to eat is a messy thing. And apparently, Haven has learned that oatmeal is good for her complexion, too. That’s my girl. Getting a facial AND a meal. Multitasking.

This past weekend we had a few hours with Matt’s brother, Nate, while he was between flights. We picked him up at the airport and took him out to eat at Uncle Julio’s for dinner. Despite a short nap, Haven was in fine spirits during dinner. She scarfed down tortillas and pinto beans while frantically waving at the waitstaff as they passed. After dinner we spent a few moments together before Nate was gone again. We are so grateful for the time together and are counting down the days we will see Uncle Nate (and Shanna and Ella) again.

I’ve done peed my pants. We are going to a house concert for the Mandolin Sessions. A HOUSE concert. You can’t get much more intimate than that. I’m over the MOON excited to be going.

When I was thirty weeks pregnant we set out to find a new provider to deliver our baby. We were with a midwifery group that works with physicians, but after I was scolded me for reading too much, I needed to find someone else. So, I ventured out looking for another group of midwives with hospital privileges. Lucky for us, we found Loudoun Community Midwives. Yes, in Loudoun County. For those of you who aren’t familiar with the lay of the land up here, that’s about an hour drive from where we live. But, after meeting with their staff we were SURE they were the right fit for us. And after going through delivery with them, I am convinced we made the right decision.
We immediately fell in love with the midwives. They let us ask all the questions we wanted during our office visits. We were a team before we ever went to the delivery room to play ball. The goal? To have a beautiful, healthy baby, with the hope of doing it the old fashioned way. But, our game plan went into overtime. Haven was born an entire day after my water broke. I didn’t start contractions on my own…so we started pitocin at noon….then around midnight…when I wanted to push…but shouldn’t because I was only 6 cm…so I had an epidural (which wasn’t part of the plan, but if we had any hopes of a vaginal birth it was necessary). Throughout that whole time, our midwife Wendy was a phenomenal coach who stayed with us even after her shift ended. She napped on a cot in the Birthing Inn, patiently waiting for little Haven to come out. We are both convinced that had we not had Wendy Haven would not have been born vaginally.
As if Wendy wasn’t Wonder Woman enough in our eyes, she is also involved with Midwives for Haiti. You can read more about Wendy’s work on her blog, Haiti Babies.

Thursday, November 12th, 2009For weeks I poured over literature and statistics about the swine flu and the vaccine contemplating whether or not to get Haven vaccinated. During that time I saw Influenza A infiltrate one of our playgroups and have listened to horror stories of friends of friends getting sick with the H1N1 flu and dying. Luckily for us, our area health department has the vaccines in stock and even posts up to date information about vaccine counts at each of their locations so you know before you go if you have a chance of getting lucky.
So, today we checked the website and waltzed in around noon to get Haven her first of two H1N1 vaccines*. I was armed with milk, juice, crackers, a couple of favorite toys and books…ready for battle. But the total process, including filling out the required forms and the fifteen minute wait time following vaccination, took approximately forty minutes. Haven was a trooper. Just a little crying and then it was all over. I am hoping that round two is as uncomplicated as round one.
Happy 14 months, LMH. Sooey!
*Because of her age, they split the dose into two parts and we will have to go back in four weeks for her second dose.
happy veterans day
Wednesday, November 11th, 2009This is a video of a dog seeing her daddy the day he got back from Afghanistan.
And another video welcoming daddy home.
Sending out lots of hugs and kisses (both human and canine) out there to our veterans, especially those near and dear to our hearts. Thanks for the links, Mark and Matt.
