it’s a bird, it’s a plane, no, it’s a boob!

Thursday, July 27th, 2006

Quick, get that picture of a boob off my coffee table. What pornography! The nerve of Babytalk magazine putting a baby nursing on the cover. How gross! Shred it before my husband gets home!

I can’t believe that this is the reaction of some people. A profile of a baby nursing is making headline news. I mean, is this what we should really be talking about?

Me, I’m all for nursing, public nursing included. I know, I know. I’m not a mom yet, but I don’t see how I can join “the other side” on this matter. Yes, breasts are sexual objects, but it isn’t like nursing mothers are whipping out their tits like on Bourbon Street. And guess what, the article only talks about other women being disgusted…what man is opposed to seeing a flash of a breast? I know for a fact that little boys who saw women breastfeeding in public are doing perfectly fine as grown men.

If you are part of the anti-public nursing camp, I’d love to hear a good reason why women shouldn’t nurse in public. In the meantime, I tell all those nursing moms to keep milking, wherever you may be! It does a body good!

go tell it on the mountain…

One weekend on our way out the door, a white man and two black women came to our door to preach the word of God to us. I politely told them we were heading out and really didn’t have time to talk. A few times since then, I’ve seen the same man, but every time he’s with different women, all black. Three Saturdays in a row now, we’ve actually been here when they’ve been walking up and down our street, which can only mean to me that our street is full of people who need to be saved. Two weeks ago, I just didn’t answer the door, last week they skipped our house (maybe they saw us running around the house in our underwear). But, this week they popped in again. I cracked the door, stuck my head out, saw the white man at the end of our driveway and knew what the neatly dressed black women were doing knocking at my door. I absolutely hate being rude to these people. In the South you’re just nice to everybody, whether you like them or not. But, as a Southerner, I think you grow up with some sort of instinct to know when people really like you, and when they are bluffing. So, once they began their marketing campaign, I simply said, “I’m sorry. I’m just not interested. Could you please not come to my house again?” Was that rude? What’s the proper way to deal with uninvited guests?

You gotta love this obituary for Fred Clark, written by Clark himself.

our home
We wanted to take some pictures of our house while everything was popping up out of our freshly mulched mulch beds, so here’s some pictures. If you look closely you can see how the brick in the front is laid differently around the windows, but I’m still convinced that shutters would improve the look.

we’ll leave the light on for you!

Our front porch lights were rusty beyond repair and were becoming somewhat of an eyesore. On a recent trip to Home Depot I stopped by the lighting center to see what was available. Most of the more expensive porch lighting turns on when it gets dark, which wasn’t really appealing to us, since we prefer sleeping in a dark room. So, I picked up a pair of black aluminum lights for $10/each. So, for $20 and about fifteen minutes of my handyman husband’s time, we have a new look at our entrance. What a look! Next project? Installing ceiling fan on screened in porch.

We’ve got drawers again!

Ever since I left for college my clothing storage has been the following: dorm dresser, Rubbermaid containers, clothes baskets, decorative baskets, and yes, even Wal-Mart bags at times. Matt had a baby dresser up until the time we donated it to Goodwill before our last move. So, what a blessing to have real grown-up furniture that didn’t come from Ikea.

We are thoroughly pleased with the arrival of our furniture. The delivery went smoothly…Matt really liked the delivery men, who were quite funny and professional, very focused on customer service, a rarity these days. When cleaning the drawers before stocking them, I noticed the drawers on our dresser and chest have English dovetail construction, not the French dovetail like the showroom model. How strange is that? We are actually pleased that the delivered product is made with English dovetails, but being who we are, we are a little curious as to why they are different. If you are clueless on what all this tail talk is about, check out this article, Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About Drawer Construction.

We are in love with our new furniture!

Here’s some pictures Matt took while we were at the United States Grand Prix this year. We fear that this might be the last time Formula One comes to Indianapolis…there were less vendors this year and there’s no contract in place to bring F1 back next year. This year we decided not to camp and splurged on a hotel room that was well worth the money. Our commute into town wasn’t bad at all (less than 20 minutes), and the only time we really hit traffic was coming out of the city after the race. The weather was hot, hot, hot and it was incredibly nice to come back to a shower and an air conditioned room.

i’m not crazy!

This report came out last week, but deserves to be posted, even if it is old news…

For years people have thought I was crazy for going out of my way to avoid exposure to cigarette smoke. I am so sensitive that even a small whiff can set me off, resulting in itchy eyes and nagging headaches that won’t go away. I have even been told me that these symptoms were psychosomatic. Now there’s proof that I am not full of shit. The latest report from the Surgeon General backs me up. Let’s just hope this report is a catalyst for smoke free buildings and public areas for everyone. I’d love to be able to go dancing without having to deal with cigarette smoke!!!
