paint buffet…check!

Tuesday, June 6th, 2006

A couple of weeks ago while Matt was gone on a business trip I transformed an ugly buffet I had picked up off freecycle into something functional and much more attractive to look at. I removed the old hardware, sanded, two coats of primer, two coats of paint and new hardware and over twelve hours of work later we have the finished product. Here’s some before and after pictures.

This was what it looked like right after I picked it up several months ago…

We have finished painting the master bedroom! Check out the pictures!!!

Here’s what it looked like before we painted. A soothing sea foamy green that just begged to be painted a neutral bedroom color.

painting party!

Saturday, June 3rd, 2006

Last July we painted a large part of the interior of the house, a huge undertaking, but we were delighted with the results. In preparation of the arrival of our new furniture, we’ve decided to prime and paint the master bedroom. Currently a sea foamy green, we are painting it the same neutral color as most of the house. This morning we took everything out of the room, with the exception of the bed, vacuumed, dusted, wiped down trim and I’m getting ready to start taping. :)

with or without?

We are considering installing shutters on the front of the house. In order to see what our house would look like with shutters, we have “installed” them on the picture. Please let us know whether we should leave the house as is, or if you like the house with shutters!

baby, you’re a star!

Thursday, June 1st, 2006

Our friends, Craig and Erica, sent out an email today and I am just passing along the request. They have entered their little boy, Parker, into the Evenflo “Baby, You’re a Star” contest from June 1-15. He has a chance of winning a $10,000 college scholarship. If you can spare a few moments of your web browsing time, please visit the following URL and vote for Parker (up to 1 vote per day across the 15 days of the contest).

sweet dreams are made of this (part 2)

Thursday, June 1st, 2006

After much deliberation, we made a decision on which bedroom furniture to order. We measured everything to make sure it would fit, and took advantage of the Memorial Day sales and ordered from the Postobello Home Collection made by Drexel Heritage. Unfortunately, we chose furniture from a recently introduced line, so we spent a little more money than we would have liked, but we both think we will be really happy with the results. Since we are not looking at this as a short term purchase, investing a little more money into something we like seemed worth it. With the discounts we saved 10% with free delivery and setup, which seemed like the best deal we were going to find.* The expected delivery date is June 30th, sooner than we expected, but still gives us enough time to paint the master bedroom before the furniture arrives! We are SO excited! Check back in July for pictures!

*Holiday weekends, especially three-day ones, tend to be the best times to purchase furniture. If you want to take advantage of discounts during these weekends without dealing with the crowds, be sure to make quick friends with a sales associate. They want to earn commission dollars, whether it’s full price or 10% off. Find what you like, then ask if they are having any upcoming sales. You might be given the discount immediately. In our case, we were able to fax in the order during the time of the sale. At another store, the sales associate was willing to let us purchase pieces of the bedroom set separately, as they went on sale.

congratulations mark and penelope!

I am delighted to report that Mark, aka Safari Mark, got married this weekend to Penelope at Mountain Lake, Virginia.* We are so happy that Mark found Penelope, because if he had not found her, there was a slight chance he might not find anybody. They are just perfect for each other.

The interfaith wedding ceremony was delightful! Penelope’s cousin is a Rabbi and personalized the ceremony with spontaneous quips. The weather was beautiful for their special day and it was great to meet the families of our two special friends.

We even had a few hours to stroll around downtown Blacksburg, Virginia during our stay. As with most college towns, the summertime is a great time to visit because the students have all gone home. We had drinks and garlic wings at Sharkey’s late Saturday night, and enjoyed lunch on the upstairs balcony at Boudreauxs before heading to the wedding. It was nice to be able to go to our old stompin’ grounds again.

*For clarification purposes Mountain Lake, Virginia is not the same place as SMITH Mountain Lake, Virginia. I can’t tell you how many people I work with didn’t know that they were two different places!
